AN ANNUAL pancake dash across a village green is to mark its silver anniversary this Shrove Tuesday.

Great Ayton’s pancake races have been taking place across High Green for the past 25 years.

To mark the occasion the race’s original founders, Mike and John Heagney have been invited as guests of honour, to start the races. They began organising the event when they ran a supermarket in the village.

In recent years, Great Ayton residents Heather Bone and Daniel Matuszak have taken over the event.

Heather said: “I have been involved the pancake races ever since they began and took over them from the Heagney brothers when they sold the store. It is a great morning and it’s always nice to see the children enjoying themselves and having great fun.”

Last year more than 100 children took part in the contest from Marwood CE and Roseberry primary schools, along with children from Scallywags and Sunnyfield nurseries.

The races begin at 9.30am on Tuesday, February 9 and the Phalp family from School Farm in Great Ayton are providing small chocolate eggs to participants.

Organisers say everyone is invited to watch the races.
