POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a pedestrian was knocked down and killed this morning.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said officers received a report of a collision involving a car and a female pedestrian in Victoria Road West, Hebburn, on South Tyneside at about 9.30am.

Emergency services attended the scene but the female, believed to be aged in her 60s, was pronounced dead.

The road was closed as officers carried out inquiries and collision investigation work.

The male driver of the vehicle involved in the collision was uninjured is helping police with their enquiries.

Inquiries into the collision are ongoing and officers would encourage anyone who saw what happened to get in touch.
