TWO of the region’s best-known actresses will be honoured with honorary degrees from a North-East university.

Brenda Blethyn, star of the hit crime drama Vera, and Eaglescliffe-born Felicity Finch, who has played Ruth Archer on the popular BBC Radio 4 show for 30 years, are to be honoured by Sunderland University.

They will be presented with their awards alongside 3,000 graduating students at the Stadium of Light next month.

Honorary degrees will also be awarded to Paul Callaghan, Chairman of the Leighton Group; Ken Bremner, of City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust; Heidi Mottram, of Northumbrian Water; Lesley Spuhler, of the Foundation of Light and Gary Fildes, of the Kielder Observatory.

University Vice-Chancellor Shirley Atkinson said: “We are proud to pay tribute to our honoraries at this year’s Graduation Ceremonies.

“They have all made a significant impact in their chosen careers and will be a tremendous inspiration to our graduates who are celebrating their academic success before beginning or continuing their own career”.
