HUNDREDS of concrete panels that will form part of a new bridge have arrived on site.

The bridge deck for Sunderland’s New Wear Crossing is being brought to the site ready for assembly.

The new bridge will cross the River Wear between Wessington Way in Castletown and European Way in Pallion and is on track to open in the spring of 2018 costing £117m.

It is the first bridge to be built over the Wear in Sunderland for more than 40 years and is part of the wider strategic transport plan to link the Port of Sunderland and city centre with the A19.

Sunderland City Council Leader Cllr Paul Watson said he was excited to see work progressing on the new bridge and the benefits it would bring.

“This project is already providing benefits to Sunderland and the wider North East region in terms of local businesses winning work on site, or contracts to supply materials to site,” said Cllr Watson.

Bridge supports on either side of the river will take shape in the coming weeks, while the bridge deck itself is assembled on the embankment on the south side of the river.
