WORK has begun on a near-£60,000 play park at a popular nature reserve.

Durham Wildlife Trust hopes the WildPlay area will attract families with younger children to its flagship Rainton Meadows nature reserve, near Houghton-le-Spring.

The bulk of the money, £51,187, came from a Biffa Award. The Postcode Community Trust gave £7,500 and The Rothley Trust added £800.

Jim Cokill, director of Durham Wildlife Trust, said: “We are very grateful to Biffa Award, Postcode Community Trust and The Rothley Trust for making this possible.

“The WildPlay area should encourage more people from the local area to visit this nature reserve and enjoy their local wildlife.”

Sam McGreever, co-creative director at Infinite Playgrounds, which has designed and is installing the facility, added: “It’s great to work with Durham Wildlife Trust in such a beautiful setting.

“The project fits perfectly with the way Infinite Playgrounds works, encouraging a love of the natural world and promoting outdoor enjoyment and activities in a natural setting. We are pleased to work with the Trust to enhance its already excellent offering to its family visitors.”

The play area will be open by the end of October.
