A 45-YEAR-OLD arrested in Sunderland in connection with offences under the Terrorism Act remains in custody.
Officers from the North East Counter Terrorism Unit, acting together with officers from Northumbria Police and Police Service of Northern Ireland detained the man yesterday (Sunday, September 20) following an investigation into an explosives find in West Belfast in Northern Ireland.
More than half a kilogram of Semtex explosives , two handguns, more than 200 rounds of ammunition and two detonators were recovered when police raided a property in the Ballymurphy area of Belfast on Friday.
The PNSI said the search was part of an investigation into violent dissident republican activity. The threat level from dissidents opposed to the peace process in Northern Ireland remains severe.
A spokesman for the North East Counter Terrorism Unit said today (Monday, September 21): “I can confirm that the 45-year-old male remains in custody.
“There is no further update at this time.”
A man, aged 67, and a 38-year-old woman detained in Belfast following the security operation have been released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.
