AN iconic rocket from television fiction will land in the North-East tomorrow, to provide a ‘fab’ surprise for shoppers.

International Rescue’s fast action-response vehicle Thunderbird 1 will touch down at the Metrocentre, in Gateshead, on Thursday (27 August).

A 4ft-tall model of the rocket, piloted in the cult 1960s tv puppet series by the eldest of the Tracy brothers, Scott, will be on display at the centre’s Platinum Mall.

The show has won a younger generation of fans after being revived in animated format, as Thunderbirds Are Go, on ITV, earlier this year.

Among those keen to get a glimpse of the famous rocket at close quarters will be Mackenzie Toal, from Prudhoe, in Northumberland, and Myah Rose Wilson, from Sunderland, the centre’s nominated, “head and deputy head of fun”.

Eight-year-old Mackenzie said: “I’m mega excited to see Thunderbird 1.

“I think the show’s great and it’ll be amazing to see the rocket close up.”

He and his seven-year-old ‘deputy’ were awarded their specially-created titles earlier this year, tasked with improving the Metrocentre experience for young visitors.
