SUNDERLAND AFC heroes Jimmy Montgomery and Dick Malone started a cancer charity run today (Wednesday, July 15).
The two 1973 FA Cup winners fired the starting horn as 110 npower employees based at Rainton Bridge, Wearside embarked upon on a 5km run in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
The run was part of the £203 challenge, where all npower staff are challenged to raise £203 for Macmillan during 2015.
The event is expected to raise around £2,000, which the energy firm will match.
James Hillock, a project support officer at npower, said: “The fun run was a huge success and we’re thrilled that Dick and Jimmy could do the honours of starting the race for us.
“All of the employees at Rainton are dedicated to supporting our local community and Macmillan has supported many of our people, so the fun run is our chance to give a little back.
“Having a mother who’s recently retired from nursing, I know first-hand how important the role of nursing is and just how dedicated nurses are, so it’s a fantastic cause to support.”
