THREE men have been arrested following a disturbance in Newcastle city centre this afternoon.

Police were called to George Street, near Newcastle College, just before 1pm today amid reports of an incident involving a group of men. (Tuesday, May 12)

Emergency services attended and a man was taken to hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

It's not known how the man suffered his injuries, although it's thought they may have been caused by a knife.

Extra officers are in the area to offer reassurance to the local community.

Chief Inspector Clare Langley said: "We recognise the local community may be concerned about this incident and have extra officers in the area to offer reassurance.

"Officers are carrying out enquiries in order to establish what has happened and we would ask any witnesses to contact us.

"A man has been taken to hospital, the extent of his injuries are not yet know but these are not believed to be life-threatening."
