HUNDREDS of mourners gathered today to pay their last respects to murder victim Tipu Sultan.

The open air funeral service in the car park of the Sunderland Bangladesh International Centre comes two weeks after he was shot dead outside his family’s takeaway.

The father-of-two was killed behind his Herbs and Spice Kitchen takeaway on Lake Avenue in South Shields on Tuesday, April 7.

Last night mourners gathered at the scene of the shooting to pay their respects by holding a one minute’s silence.

Today (Wednesday) people travelled from across the country for his funeral.

Following prayers at local mosque, people made their way to the car park for a short service and prayers, with his coffin placed in front of the centre. Mr Sultan’s burial was then held at Seaburn Cemetery in Sunderland.

Mr Sultan of Millfield Sunderland, is survived by his wife Julie Nasrin and son Ilyas, seven, and two-year-old daughter Aeysha.

He was a keen Sunderland AFC supporter and regularly took his son to matches at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland Bangladesh International Centre chairman Syed Khalid Miah Olid said: “This has been such a bad thing, not only for the Bangladesh community, but the wider community as well.

“Hopefully, the police can find this person and Tipu Sultan’s family can get justice.”

Detectives investigating the murder said they have found no motive for the killing and that the victim had no known enemies.

They are continuing to hunt two for men on a red 600cc motorcycle, who they believe were responsible for the cold-blooded killing.

The police have released a number of CCTV images of the men on a motorbike - spotted heading along Lumley Avenue, Chirton Grove and then into Lake Avenue moments before the shooting.

The gunman is thought to have spoken a few words to Mr Sultan to identify him before his murder. He is thought to have then shouted "Go, go, go!" in a North-East accent to the biker. They then left the scene along Lizard Lane towards the Whitburn area.

A 35-year-old man, from Newcastle, was arrested and questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.
