SUNDERLAND player Wes Brown is backing a community programme to improve adults' reading and writing.

The Foundation of Light, the club’s charity arm, is holding informal sessions for over-18s at South Shields Central Library, South Tyneside, starting on Monday (February 23) between 10am and noon.

"It is great to see parents being given the chance to help their children with homework and become more involved in their education," said the former England International, who is Ambassador for the Foundation's Family Learning programmes.

"I am delighted to support the Foundation's programmes which improve the lives of so many people."

Jacqueline Smith, the Foundation of Light's Further Education Officer, said: "The literacy programme is designed to meet the needs of those in the local community who may not ordinarily have access or the confidence to take the step to improve and develop their existing literacy skills.

"I'm sure the course will prove to be a positive and successful venture and it is a fantastic opportunity for Foundation of Light to work with South Shields Central Library."
