ARMED crooks have burgled a city pub.

Two men stormed into the Gleneagles pub, on Gleneagles Road, Sunderland, at about 5.50am today (Tuesday, January 27), one armed with an iron bar.

They demanded money, although police have not said whether any was taken.

A resident of the pub suffered a head injury. He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment, although his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and is said to be helping police with enquiries.

Extra police are on patrol in the area in an effort to reassure residents.

Northumbria Police have launched an investigation and have appealed for anyone with information on the aggravated burglary to call the police non-emergency number, 101, quoting reference 0123 27/10/14, or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
