SUNDERLAND’S Christmas lights switch-on is officially on the move as it sets up camp at a new site.

The annual event, which has seen its audience grow significantly over the past few years, looks forward to welcoming its biggest visitor figures when it launches at the Crowtree Site in the city centre on Thursday, November 13.

Cllr John Kelly, Sunderland City Council’s portfolio holder for public health, wellness and culture, said: "Our annual Christmas lights switch-on signals the start of a wide range of festive celebrations across the city.

“This fantastic family occasion is always fun and I encourage everyone, young and old to come along this year and join in the count-down to the mayor and his special guests turning on the city centre Christmas lights.

“This annual celebration also helps to launch late night shopping in the city centre which will continue right up until Christmas."

Beginning at 6pm, the evening will include festive entertainment, with live music and a spectacular firework display.

A celebrity guest, yet to be announced, will switch the lights on at 7pm.
