A CHARITY golf day and a World Cup memorabilia auction in the North-East has raised over £50,000.

Golfers took part in the Alan Shearer Foundation Trophy competition, which was followed by the sale of rare items, at Close House in Northumberland on Friday.

The former England and Newcastle captain donated a Brazil shirt signed by football legend Pelé and 17 fellow footballers who commentated on the 2014 tournament to raise funds at the day he hosted.

BBC TV World Cup Final scripts autographed by Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand and Alan Hansen on his very last appearance before his retirement from punditry after 22 years were also auctioned.

Tickets for Ant and Dec's Takeaway tour together with a corporate box at St James' Park for this season's Newcastle versus Chelsea match were included in the auction lots which boosted the fundraising total.

Organiser Alan Shearer said: “It's fantastic to have such great support for the foundation from the business community and Close House golfers.

“All the money raised from the golf event goes to the Alan Shearer Centre in Newcastle to develop its specialist services and facilities for disabled children and adults.”

All the players from the 24 teams which supported the event each received a thank-you goodie bag which included a pair of boxer shorts provided by Oddballs, a company launched by ex-Newcastle goalkeeper, Steve Harper, and former Scottish rugby union and Falcons player, Richard Metcalfe.

Businessman Richard Wylie's four-man team won the trophy this year.

The funds raised are used by the North-East charity St Cuthbert’s Care, which runs the Alan Shearer Centre, to support people with profound disabilities and complex needs.
