TWO university students have been arrested after police found drugs at their accommodation.

The pair, who are studying at Newcastle University, were held on Friday, March 28 after police and a Newcastle Cty Council environmental health officer went to an address in Fern Avenue, Jesmond, to seize sound equipment following the breach of a noise abatement order.

Officers suspected drug use and a house search uncovered suspected cocaine, drugs paraphernalia and a large amount of cash.

A man aged 24 was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled class A drug with intent to supply and a man aged 22 was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled class B drug with intent to supply.

A third man aged 27, not a student, was also arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled class A drug with intent to supply. All three have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Neighbourhood Inspector Neil Brotherton said: "This should act as a warning to people that we work closely with our partners to take action against those suspected of being involved in drug use and supply.

"In particular, students should be aware that we share information with partner agencies, including the universities, and none of us will tolerate such behaviour.

"Criminal activity such as this could see them removed from education and ruin their bright future prospects, not to mention the health implications. It's just not worth it."

Dr Alison Oldham, head of the university’s Student Wellbeing Service, said: "The university does not tolerate drug use and any students found in possession of drugs will be subject to university disciplinary procedures. “
