POLICE have moved to allay fears after reports of men hiding in bushes along a popular cycle path circulated on social media.
Officers responded after speculation on Facebook about a “gang of men” near the former railway track running from Annfield Plain into Stanley, County Durham.
A mother posted a warning about a man “with a mask over his eyes” who asked her daughter and a friend if they would like to go and meet his family.
The girls ran to tell a grown up. The post was shared 1,600 times.
A police spokesman said: "In response to additional reports and comments being made on social media, we would like to offer further reassurance.
"We can confirm that we are investigating a report of a male approaching a child, however we understand this to be an individual and not a gang of men.
"We hope that this will add clarity to reports circulating online."
- Anyone with any concerns are encouraged to call Sergeant Emma Kay on Durham Police on 101.
