POLICE are working bank staff to warn people about fraud committed online.

Staff from Santander in Stanley were at Pact House further down on Front Street as part of the Internet Safety Day on Thursday.

Durham Constabulary said the issue is a growing concern, particularly among the elderly who are becoming more vulnerable as technology improves and scammers get more creative.

Sergeant Dave Clarke, of Stanley Police, said: “We have all had e-mails from alleged distant cousins in Africa who wish to bestow unbounded wealth upon us for a small advance.

“Many of these are easy to spot, however, many of the newer online scams are much more sophisticated and most people need to keep on top of the latest ruses to keep themselves protected.

“This can be difficult if people are only occasional computer users and it can leave them exposed and wary of using online banking.”

The community café at Pact House, also on Front Street also has information about how to avoid being scammed while online.

People who need advice can drop in for free tea coffee and biscuits.

Sgt Clarke said: “The staff at Santander, are keen to keep their customers protected at all times and are trained to spot any unusual activity among the banking habits of their most vulnerable clients.”
