A COMMUNITY park is to showcase the history of its surrounding area.
Four new heritage boards are to be installed in Annfield Plain Park, near Stanley, next month.
The park opened in 1923 after the land was donated by the South Moor Colliery Company.
Over the past six months, Durham County Council has worked alongside the Annfield Plain Family History Society to research local history around four main topics including the village, the railways, mining and the park itself.
A public launch event was held in Annfield Plain Library this week so people could see the boards for the first time, learn more about their local area, and sign up as a ‘friend’ of the park.
John Milburn, of Annfield Plain Family History Society, said: “It is excellent to see local history come to life in something that everyone can enjoy.”
A new junior play area has been installed in the park and more projects are scheduled for this year.
Councillor Thomas Nearney said: “We hope the boards will provide information and enjoyment for years to come.”
