AN autism charity is £500 better off after support from a housing provider.

The North East Autism Society says it will use the money donated by Derwentside Homes to help its Family Support Service.

Staff raised the money through a series of cake sales, raffles and dress down days and also attended a series of workshops to help them understand the condition and how it can impact on the lives of people who use their service.

Andrew Thompson, Head of Finance at Derwentside Homes said: “For many people autism is a hidden condition as it is not always immediately obvious.

“Having attended the session we are now looking at ways we can make things easier for tenants with autism such as quieter areas for interviews.”

Sophie Clarke, of the North East Autism Society, said: “The money raised will help to continue the work of our Family Support Service across the North East.

“This flexible outreach service offers support to families who are in need or in crisis, seven days a week”.
