A COMMUNITY choir for older people in north Durham is looking for more members.

The Silver Singers Stanley are holding a free open session on Monday, February 8, from 10.30am, at Stanley Masonic Hall.

It is for anyone over the age of 50 who would like to find out more about the group and have a go at singing with a friendly and informal choir.

Silver Singers Stanley is one of a number of similar choirs across the region which form part of Sage Gateshead’s Silver Programme for older people.

The Stanley group is run in partnership with Leisureworks, and the choir meets on Monday mornings during school term-time at Stanley Masonic Hall, between 10.30am and noon.

The normal weekly payment is £4 which includes refreshments.

A spokesman for the group said: “New members are welcomed all year round, but the aim of this free taster session is to offer people who might have thought about singing, but not felt confident enough to join the group, the chance to try out the experience before committing to regular attendance.

“No previous experience is necessary, there is no “audition” and you do not need to be able to read music.

“Simply turn up from 10am, have a warming cup of tea or coffee, meet Sofia de Castro, the music leader, and other members and then join in the singing.”
