WELLY wanging, sheaf tossing and tomahawk throwing are among the activities to try when a museum holds its annual agricultural show.

Beamish Museum is to hold its four-day show starting on Thursday (Sept 17), featuring the sights, sounds and smells of a country show of the early 1900s with a couple of modern day additions.

Making their first appearance at the Show are the 16th Lancers Cavalry Unit, entertaining the crowds displays of horsemanship and immaculate uniforms and tack. The Gordon Highlanders add to the atmosphere with precision displays of military drill.

Visitors can try archery and tomahawk throwing, Toss the Sheaf and Welly Wanging, meet the museum’s pit ponies and alpacas, learn about bee-keeping and honey production, watch sheep shearing and see birds of prey in action.

In the craft marquee there are woodworkers, a leather worker, a rake maker, mat makers and quilters at work, while the Industry Section features cooks, knitters, photographers and winemakers competing to win a red rosette.

Outside there’s a period style Ferguson Tractor trade stand and agricultural machinery on show and in action as well as a choice of beer tent or Temperance Tea Tent.
