ARTWORK produced by people in north Durham is going on show at Stanley Civic Hall.

The first exhibition by the People’s Art Community Studio will be running until the end of the month.

Five artists from Stanley, Consett, Lanchester and Shotley Bridge have taken part, working with oils, acrylics and watercolours.

The subject matter includes graffiti, still life, landscapes, seascapes, floral pieces and portraits.

Group leader and tutor Mick Brown, 48, from Stanley, said: “The art is not mainstream, and not twee.

“You would not find this sort of thing on a packet of Rington’s tea.

“It is contemporary and challenging. The art is there to show that we are here and the art scene in north Durham is alive and growing. There are some very creative and talented people in the area and this is what they can do.”

The show opens on Wednesday and there will be an open evening on Thursday, from 6.30pm.

People can see the show on weekdays from 9am-5pm and on evenings, except Mondays.

The group, set up with £1,700 backing from Stanley Town Council, meets at the Civic Hall on Tuesdays from 6pm-8pm and at Tanfield Lea Community Centre on Mondays from 6pm-8pm and Tuesdays from 1pm-3pm.
