DETECTIVES are continuing to investigate a fire that forced the closure of a north Durham primary school – as education chiefs pledged to reopen it in the new term.

Parents and children were devastated by a fire at Burnside Primary School on Mendip Terrace, South Stanley, on Tuesday.

The blaze broke between 7.30pm and 8pm, shortly after pupils had attended a Valentine’s party.

Police said it is not believed the person who started the fire intended to cause damage to the main building, but it spread into a small room which caused further smoke damage to a classroom.

Detective Inspector Gavin Heckles, who is leading the investigation said: “The police and the school are keen to work with the neighbouring community to identify who caused the fire.

"We are keen to speak with parents or children who may know what happened. The individual or individuals responsible will be treated fairly in the hope that they can be educated and any fire like this is prevented in the future.”

Sheila Palmerley, strategic manager for school places and admissions, said: “The school is expected to reopen the Monday after half term.

!The classroom affected has been isolated and the rest of the school is being cleaned and prepared ready to welcome back pupils.

“Other local schools have been very supportive and all pupils will be accommodated in suitable classrooms after the school holidays. Parents will be kept informed of any changes.”
