A PUB is holding a fundraising night in aid of one of its regulars who died while on holiday.

Talented young footballer Daniel Sirrell, from Peterlee, died in Amsterdam after falling in a canal.

The 21-year-old died on Sunday, May 20 and his friends are raising money to help his family pay for medical costs incurred when he was treated in the Netherlands.

The Black Bull, in Old Shotton, where Mr Sirrell was a regular, is holding the fundraising event tonight.

The event will include live music, a raffle, and a cocktail named in Mr Sirrell’s honour – the “summer Sirrell”.

Following his death, two online crowdfunding campaigns were set up to raise money to bring his body home.

Online crowdfunding campaigns started by his friends have raised around £45,000

A charity football match is also taking place at East Durham College, in Peterlee, today. It takes place between 12pm and 7pm, with a 2pm kick off.

The money raised will go to a charity in his name.
