COUNCILLORS have approved a development comprising 12 affordable homes near Peterlee town centre.

The three-bedroom homes in Matterdale Road will be offered under the government backed Rent to Buy scheme - aimed at giving people the opportunity to save for a deposit at the same time and buy their home after five years.

County Durham Housing Group Head of Development and Commercial Property, Kate Abson, said: “This project has been created to help Peterlee families get their first foot on to the property ladder.

"We understand that demand for affordable homes in east Durham is strong and it was great to hear passionate support for this scheme from the Durham County Council's area planning committee members.

“We’re already working on preparations for construction and are very much looking forward to starting work on site later this year.”

The homes will feature high levels of insulation, the latest heating systems and double glazing.
