DETECTIVES investigating an armed bank robbery have arrested two men.

The men, who are in their 30s, were questioned on suspicion of robbery, in connection with the raid on TSB in Horden, County Durham, last month.

Men armed with a crowbar and a stick burst into the Blackhills Road branch at 10.45am on Wednesday, September 21, and fled with bags of cash.

Durham police said two female members of staff were injured during the incident and treated for minor injuries by ambulance crews at the scene.

Two female members of the public were also injured, but did not require treatment.

They escaped in a silver Ford Mondeo, which was later found burned out on the nearby Cotsford Park Estate.

The fire spread to the garden of family home and staff at Cotsford Infant School keep children indoors due to the high level of police activity in the area.

Police said the men they have arrested are not from the local area and have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Officers on the case are now working with other police forces across the country.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “The investigation continues into this offence under Operation Ocean 2016.

“Two males have been arrested and have now been released on police bail.

“The males are not from the North East region.

“Detectives from Peterlee CID are working with colleagues from a number of Police Forces to gather and assess evidence.

“Dc Chris Woollett from Peterlee CID would still like to hear from anybody that has information to offer and encourages contact to be made via 101 or Crime stoppers.”

The force non-emergency number is 101 and the Crimestoppers number is 0800-555-111.
