CREATIVE college students have taken part in an inaugural art festival.

The five-day Why Art Man festival took place in Peterlee town centre, with students from East Durham College taking part in a string of different events.

Students studying the college’s creative industries courses took over the former Ethel Austin clothing store unit in the Castle Dene Shopping Centre where they set up an art gallery, whilst also holding dance, music and radio drama performances.

Students rounded off the festival with a musical performance for local MP Grahame Morris.

East Durham College creative industries lecturer, Billy Nicholson, praised the students for their hard work and dedication over the week.

He said: “It has been a fantastic event in Peterlee this week. The students have been terrific throughout.

“They all worked really hard to pull together different performance ideas and get them up to a very high standard.

“The team all worked really well together to showcase the best of what creative industries at East Durham College had to offer.”
