A FAMILY has appealed for the safe return of their beloved pet pug they think has been stolen from their County Durham garden.

Jessica Bridge says her four-year-old son Jayden is distraught after 17-month-old Elsie disappeared from their garden in Gray Avenue, Murton, at about 6pm on Sunday night.

Ms Bridge said: "It's absolutely heartbreaking - she simply vanished and we think she has probably been stolen as she can't get out of the garden on her own.

"Jayden is devastated as he and Elsie are best friends.

"She is a very nervous dog and would hate being away from home. She is like our shadow.

"We are desperate for someone to help bring her home."

Police have been informed and are due to interview the family on Monday afternoon.

"We have our suspicions but without proof we can't do anything. Please can anyone with information call the police."

The family has made posters which are being posted in the town and is also having 1,000 flyers printed.

"We are desperate and we just want her home," added Ms Bridge.
