LEISURE centre staff are to hold water safety classes to mark national Drowning Prevention Week.

Peterlee Leisure Centre will run Save A Baby workshops, free Rookie Lifeguard taster sessions for children aged eight to 14-years-old, and safety-focussed swimming lessons throughout next week.

The centre is working with the Royal Lifesaving Society UK charity on activities which aim to ensure everyone knows how to have fun and stay safe near water.

The Save A Baby workshops will take place on Wednesday (June 24) from 5pm to 6.30pm.

A spokesman for the 1Life Peterlee Leisure Centre said: “Shockingly, drowning is the third highest cause of accidental death in children in the UK.

“Around 400 people drown in the UK each year, and thousands more suffer near-drowning experiences, many resulting in life changing injuries.

“We are happy to support RLSS UK to reduce these numbers by informing our customers about how to be safe near water.”
