A BUSY east Durham road was closed for more than three hours this morning after a lorry overturned during rush hour.
A police spokesman said the lorry had been travelling north on the A19 and had turned west on to the A181 near Wingate, near Peterlee, when for a reason yet to be established it overturned at 7am.
The 52-year-old driver, who is believed to be from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, was unhurt.
Emergency services closed the road just west of the Wellfield Road turnoff to Wingate.
A Durham Police spokesman said: “The A181 was been blocked by the lorry and the road was closed in both while the vehicle was being recovered with specialist equipment.
“They were unable to recover the vehicle until its contents were removed.”
The road was reopened at 10.30am.
