TOWN councillors who have thrown their weight behind a bid to keep a giant steel sculpture of a First World War soldier will meet on Wednesday (June 18) to discuss the way ahead.

A campaign to keep the Eleven “O” One sculpture in Seaham has raised about £40,000 toward the £85,000 price tag, to keep the statue on the sea front.

Artist Ray Lonsdale of South Hetton, has had two offers to buy the statue, but has rejected them as he hopes it can remain in Seaham, where it has won the hearts of residents.

The town council is expected to agree to take on the upkeep and insurance of piece, affectionately named Tommy. The piece is over 9ft high and weighs 1.2 tonnes.

County and town councillors Eddie and Jenny Bell have said they will donate £5,000 from their county council community neighbourhood funds.

The campaign group Mission 1101 is being helped by the County Durham Foundation to set up a charitable trust and is urging supporters to donate through Just Giving to ensure that gift aid can be claimed.

The East Durham Area Action Partnership has also pledged to potentially help out.

The council will meet in the new town hall, in the former Seaham Red Star Club, at 7pm on Wednesday, with 15 minutes set aside at the start of the session for residents to ask questions.

If the full amount is not raised before the deadline in nine weeks, the funds will be used to commission Mr Lonsdale to create a different piece of art.
