A COLOURFUL display of textiles has gone on display as part of a new visual arts festival.

Betty Barnet Brown, from Brandon, has created The Floating City of Haberdash in the Gala Theatre, Durham.

The textile exhibition, created from large translucent fabrics, aims to engage with the audience through its use of shape and structure.

The artist, who runs two local sewing groups in Esh Winning and Brandon, said: “I’m delighted to be bringing this work to Gala and to make a piece on such a big scale.

“The colourful fabrics really transform the space and I hope visitors enjoy the exhibition and take something from it.”

She will also be leading a workshop on Tuesday, June 12 to give young people the chance to experiment with colour and patterns.

It costs £1 and can be booked through the Gala’s box office.

The exhibition is aimed at expanding Durham’s long tradition of working with textiles, from its history of carpet making to the creation of banners seen in the Miners’ Gala.

The Art Durham festival takes place from June 5-17.
