A COLOURFUL festival to mark the coming of spring will be celebrated at a North-East museum.

Families are invited to join in the celebrations to mark the traditional Indian spring festival of Holi at the Oriental Museum in Durham on Sunday, March 12.

Also known as the Festival of Colours, Holi is celebrated by throwing brightly-coloured powders over friends and relatives.

The museum will host five powder-throwing sessions during the afternoon, as well as family crafts, storytelling, music, and traditional rangoli drawing.

Event organiser Charlotte Spink said: “This year’s Holi festival is going to be spectacularly colourful.

“We have had tremendous support from the Hindu community in organising the event, and we are all looking forward to a wonderful day.

“We hope that visitors will have fun getting messy in the powder throws and also enjoy the free crafts and entry to the Museum that’s included in the ticket price.”

  • Tickets are £4 per person and free for the under twos, available from theorientalmuseum.eventbrite.co.uk. Visitors are advised to book in advance and wear light coloured clothes.
