WORK on a new footpath and cycle way aimed at improving access to Durham train station is due to start this week.
The shared pedestrian and cycle route will link into the existing cycle network and will run alongside Framwelgate Peth between County Hall and the train station.
The path on the the County Hall side of the road will be widened and paving replaced with a smoother surface, while steps are being installed to the north of the railway bridge, providing a direct link between the station and Milburngate House.
Meanwhile, the footpath on the opposite side of Framwelgate Peth will be upgraded to accommodate cyclists.
Cllr Neil Foster, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: “As well as providing better access to Durham station for both pedestrians and cyclists, the upgraded pedestrian and cycle route will also connect the station to new developments in the north of the city.”
Existing footpaths will be closed while work is carried out but alternative pedestrian and cycle routes will be in place.
