A BRAVE five-year-old boy is looking forward to turning on the Christmas lights in Durham.

Bradley Lowery, who has neuroblastoma, has been invited to turn on the lights outside County Hall in Durham on Friday, December 2.

The young Sunderland and superheroes fan was re-diagnosed with the disease, after beating it when he was two.

Fundraisers who are trying to raise enough money for Bradley’s treatment in America will also be attending.

Bradley’s mother, Gemma Lowery, said: “Bradley who’s a very fun loving, sociable little boy, is so excited to turn the Christmas lights on at County Hall.”

“Just like any other boy, Bradley loves superheroes and playing with his dogs. He takes everything in his stride and deals with whatever is thrown at him with a smile on his face.”

The council’s chairman, Cllr Edward Bell, said: “I can’t wait to meet this brave little lad and his family. He has gone through so much but still manages to smile. He’s such a popular youngster that’s touched so many people’s hearts.”

The Christmas switch on in Durham

The Christmas lights in the city centre were switched on on Sunday, when families were treated to fake snow, a big screen animation of the The Night Before Christmas, lights, music and fireworks before the tree was switched on.

Meanwhile, the council’s festive reindeers have been relocated from their usual spot on Leazes Bowl roundabout.

Following changes to the road layout there is no space for the illuminated animals so they have been moved to Gilesgate roundabout.

Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, said: “The illuminated reindeer are a firm favourite of the residents, shoppers and visitors to Durham City over the Christmas period.

“We were careful to consider a new five star home for them throughout the roadworks at Leazes Bowl and I am delighted to say Gilesgate is to be their new spot.

“I am sure everyone will be relieved to know Rudolph and Co. are back and brighter than ever.”

The lights at County Hall will be switched on at 4.15pm on Friday, December 2.

  • In Darlington, the Christmas switch-on on Thursday will run from 5pm until 6.30pm. Restaurants in the Feethams Complex will be giving out food samples and some exclusive festive offers. The celebrations will begin in the Market Square before further entertainment is held across the Feethams complex.
