DURHAM’s most responsible pubs and clubs have been recognised at an annual awards evening.

The Fighting Cocks, in South Street, has been named as the best pub in the city while Loveshack, in Walkergate, was named as the best club.

The awards were given out as part of the Best Bar None scheme, which is aimed at promoting responsible management and operation of licensed premises.

Bars, pubs and clubs sign up to undergo assessments and mystery shopper visits, with accreditation given to premises meeting the criteria.

This year 34 premises achieved the standard.

A total of 12 awards were handed out at the awards ceremony at Ramside Hall Hotel last night, with the Fighting Cocks pub claiming a double title of best premises and best pub.

The Library bar, in Saddler Street, also landed two awards – best bar and best alcohol free bar.

Carol Feenan, Durham City Best Bar None manager, said: “We’re delighted to have had 37 premises signing up to take part and its brilliant that 34 of them have fulfilled the criteria we set.

“Best Bar None licensees have reported an almost 20 percent increase in profits over the last 12 months, as people choose to visit establishments which have our well-recognised accreditation.

“This year’s figures for violence against the person are also nearly ten percent lower than they were in the 12 months before Best Bar None began in Durham in 2007, and we’d like to think the scheme has contributed to that.

“Our award winners can all be rightly proud of their responsible approach – their efforts make socialising in our city’s pub, bars and clubs a safe and enjoyable experience.”

Other winners were LTs Grill, at the Court Inn, in Court Lane, which was named best restaurant and Grey College bar, which was the best university bar.

The scheme is run by Durham County Council and Durham Police.
