HUNDREDS of cyclists got hot and sweaty as they tackled the tough hills of County Durham.

More than 400 riders enjoyed the sunshine as they took on the Durham Beast on Sunday – a 52 mile ride of almost constant hills.

The fastest riders made it back to the finish in around two-and-a-half hours.

It was the eighth year the ride, which is aimed at experienced cyclists, took place.

As in previous years, cyclists started in Durham before heading towards Consett, going south to Wolsingham and returning to the city via Tow Law and Esh Winning.

Organiser Ed Tutty said: “There must be 40 hills so it’s not for the faint-hearted. The great thing about the beast is its only 52 miles which isn’t a lot of miles for serious riders but the unique thing is it’s hills. There’s only about a mile which is flat. That’s what gives it its unique place in the North-East calendar.

“Plenty of people came to take part and enjoy the day and because it was so sunny they brought friends and family so it’s a really nice atmosphere."

“This is the eighth Beast that we’ve done and we are more than happy to continue because people want to do it.”
