MEMBERS of the Women’s Institute have been turning their old underwear into plant pots for a good cause.

Shotley WI is taking part in the national organisation’s “hanging bra-sket” competition to promote recycling and reusing discarded items.

Members repurposed around 40 old bras, which have been planted up with flowers and greenery and are hanging underneath an oak tree outside Snods Parish Hall.

The women in the group spent a session turning their old underwear into planters by lining them to make them waterproof, and filling them with compost and plants.

Ruth Barrass, from the group, said: “It was great fun and it looks very good.

“It was really about recycling and it was a different angle to reusing older things.

“The WI always has some scheme or campaign on. It’s quite often something more serious like child care or women’s equality and all sorts of social issues.

“This has been good fun and the result is very striking.”

The group is planning to send a photograph of the display so it can be judged alongside others around the country.
