X-FACTOR style auditions for buskers in a city centre have been postponed following a planned protest by musicians.

The controversial auditions, which were due to take place tomorrow, had been planned as part of a new scheme to issue buskers in Durham with permits.

An online petition calling for the scheme to be scrapped attracted more than 1,000 supporters.

Durham Business Improvement District [BID], which is leading the scheme, has now said the auditions will be postponed while it works with buskers and businesses.

Adam Deathe, business manager for the BID, said: “We’re aware some concerns have been raised regarding the proposed permit scheme and we want to listen and take this feedback on board, to devise a scheme collaboratively with all stakeholders that will be of benefit to everyone.

“Ultimately the end goal is to preserve the quality of busking and continue to provide visitors to Durham with an enjoyable city experience.”

Musicians had planned a protest on Elvet Bridge, close to where the auditions were due to be held, and are still planning to congregate in the area to raise awareness about the issue and generate support from members of the public.

Organiser Chester Bingley said: “We are delighted that Durham have postponed their scheme and consider it a moral victory.

“They clearly underestimated how unpopular this would prove both with performers and the public.”
