YOUNG gardeners are looking after a community orchard and are calling for more local residents to get involved.

Around 40 fruit trees have been planted in Framwellgate Moor as part of the project.

Councillor Mark Wilkes said: “We are doing a few things trying to promote buying local food, make environmental improvement and getting people out in the community.

“There’s not enough of these things. Hopefully it will be a means of getting people involved with doing other things like tree planting and cleaning up the area.”

Local councillors have been working with Outdoor and Sustainability Education Specialists [OASES] to get children from five primary schools into the orchard.

Alice Evans, from Oases, said: “We want to tell people about the orchard and how to look after it and get involved and just let people know they’re allowed to go and pick the fruit when it’s ready.”

A family session is taking place on Monday, July 25 between 10am and 12pm to find out more about the orchard through fun activities. Meet at Fordham Road at 10am .

It can also be accessed from Pit Lane and Caterhouse Road.
