PLANS for a new block of student accommodation at a college in Durham have been approved.
East Durham College wants to build the accommodation, for 198 students, at its Houghall Campus near Durham City.
It had applied to refurbish one of its existing buildings and to demolish two more to make way for the new block of student rooms.
Principal Suzanne Duncan said the existing accommodation had fallen well below modern standards and was not used.
She said: “We would like to be able to house our own students on site, especially as we plan to increase our higher education offer.”
Concerns were raised about building on the green belt and safety on the road from the campus towards Durham but councillors voted unanimously in favour of approving the scheme.
