A TALK revealing the 16th Century history of Durham Cathedral takes place next week.

Former World Heritage Site co-ordinator Seif El Rashidi will discuss “Rites Of Durham – a 16th Century Account of Durham Cathedral” at Grey College, Durham on Sunday, November 29.

The Rites of Durham, created by an anonymous writer, is an account of life in the cathedral before the Reformation.

Mr El Rashidi, now Magna Carta 800 programme co-ordinator at Salisbury Cathedral, said: “It provides a picture of Durham as a catholic monastic institution before its conversion to an Anglican institution.

“In fact, the Rites of Durham is written on six lengthy scrolls, which give an extremely detailed account of Durham Cathedral in the first half of the sixteenth century and they provide a fascinating insight about the changes taking place then”.

The free talk is the last in Grey College’s autumn season of public lectures.

Alan Martin, President of Grey College Senior Common Room, said: “For anyone interested in Durham Cathedral, this is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about its history from someone who has a reputation for giving clear, interesting and engaging talks.

“This is a unique talk not to be missed.”

The lecture will be held at Holgate House, Grey College, South Road, at 2.15pm and entry is free.
