A HOSPICE is looking for 10 couples to take part in its most glamourous and sparkly fundraising event to date.

Strictly St Cuthbert’s will give aspiring dancers the opportunity to learn anything from energetic salsas and passionate tangos, to graceful waltzes and fun-filled jives while raising money for the Durham-based hospice.

It will culminate in a live final at Rainton Meadows Arena next February and all competitors will receive free tuition at Zazz Dance and Performing Arts Academy in Houghton-le-Spring and The Dudman Academy of Performing Arts in Newcastle.

Paul Marriot, chief executive of St Cuthbert’s Hospice, and his wife, Clare, were among the first to sign up.

He said: “I am jumping into this feet-first – the trouble is they are two left feet.

“However, I’m looking forward to learning a new skill, providing some entertainment and, above all, raising a significant sum for the hospice.”

Anne Thompson, principal of Zazz, said: “After doing the Midnight Walk a couple of years ago, it made me aware of the great work that the Hospice does.

“I lost my father to undiagnosed cancer quite suddenly, but I know if he had needed hospice care, St Cuthbert’s would have been there for him.

“Dancing is my life and training these dancers will be so much fun and also helping such a great cause.”

Everyone is welcome to take part and while there is a competitive element, the experience has been designed to be fun, friendly and supportive.

Tuition will take place on Sundays beginning on December 6 and will run for eight weeks, with a break over Christmas.

Registration is £30 per person and anyone who interested can contact Sheela Joy at St Cuthbert’s on 0191-374-6194 or Sheela.Joy@stcuthbershospice.com
