A MAN was taken to hospital with hand injuries after his car overturned near a school crossing patrol on Friday morning.

A police spokesman said emergency services were alerted after a Citroen Picasso overturned after colliding with a parked Mini in Durham Road, shortly before 8.15am.

An 80-year-old man, who lives in the area, was extricated from his car by members of the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service using cutting equipment.

He was tended to by members of the North East Ambulance Service before being taken to the University Hospital of North Durham with hand injuries which were believed to be minor.

There was no one in the Mini at the time.
