A NEW exhibition exploring the importance of pilgrimage across different faiths opens on Friday (May 22).
Pilgrimage: Pathways to Enlightenment explores the Islamic Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, the Buddhist pilgrimage to Lumbini and the Hindu Kumbh Mela tradition.
Objects on show include an Islamic prayer mat, costumes, souvenirs and old photographs.
The display will be at Durham University’s Oriental Museum until Thursday, September 24.
Lexie Hunt, a student and the exhibition designer, said: “It’s amazing to see this exhibition blossom from everything that we’ve been studying in books and putting it into a tangible gallery space. It’s really exciting.”
The museum, on Elvet Hill, Durham is open from 10am to 5pm on weekdays and from noon to 5pm on weekends and Bank Holidays. Entry costs £1.50 for adults, 75p for children aged five to 16 and over 60s and is free for under fives and students.
