DAME Esther Rantzen and actor Kevin Whately will give readings at a Holocaust memorial event.
Darkness to Light takes place at Durham Cathedral on Saturday (April 18) to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp by soldiers of the Durham Light Infantry.
The Inspector Morse and Auf Wiedersehen Pet actor will read extracts of Jewish poetry during the moving event, alongside readings from the founder of ChildLine and voiceover artist Emma Hignett.
There will be survivors’ stories and classical music featuring soprano Penelope Randall-Davis and tenor James Edwards, the Reg Vardy Band and four choirs and conducted by Alistair Dawes.
There will be music from Beethoven, Puccini, Verdi and Mozart, plus a new commission by Durham-born composer Will Todd.
