A BODY found in hills of western Scotland has been identified as that of a missing North-East hiker.

Daniel Bennett, 43, was last seen at the popular Green Welly Stop, near Tyndrum, on Saturday lunchtime (March 21).

His wife raised the alarm after he failed to return from a hiking expedition.

A major search began, involving the police, RAF and mountain rescue teams, and a body was found in the Ben Loss area on Tuesday afternoon.

Police Scotland today (Thursday, March 26) confirmed the body was that of Mr Bennett, a software developer at the Centre of Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) at Durham University.

A spokesman said no port-mortem examination had yet taken place but there were believed to be no suspicious circumstances.

Mr Bennett was an experienced hill walker and was said to never leave for a trek unprepared.
