A CHRISTMAS party for elderly people has been thrown by a North-East charity.

Durham Dunelm Round Table staged its popular Senior Citizens' Christmas Concert at Framwellgate Moor Workingmen's Club, in Framwellgate Moor, Durham today. (SUN)

The two-hour event included a buffet tea, free prize bingo and entertainment from singer Alan Mason, culminating in a round of traditional Christmas carols.

Honorary member Will Greeves said: “It is a time of year when there is quite a lot of loneliness around.

"Some people have not got any family and do not get out much, so we have offered this service and little concert for more years than I care to think about.”

Mr Greeves added: “Every year I meet somebody at the event who has no family to take them out and it is way of getting them out of their normal day-to-day routine.”

Durham Dunelm Round Table is also looking for more members to help with its work within the community.

The group meets at Bowburn Hall Hotel on the first Thursday of month at 7.30pm with a social evening on the third Thursday.
