MORE than 100 food-growing gardens will be open to the public next weekend (Saturday, September 20).

The Edible Gardens Open Day, now in its third year as a national event having started in London, will be held on Saturday, September 20.

Events will take place across the region in community allotments, orchards, housing estates, schools and parks and there will be tours, children’s activities and more.

A garden at The Medical Group surgery, at Sir Bobby Robson House, Rear Church Street, Langley Park, County Durham, will be open from 10am to 1pm for apple pressing, garden tours, bulb planting and free fruity refreshments. For more information, visit fruitfuldurham.co.uk

There will be a vegetable growing event at Kings James’ Academy community garden, South Church Road, Bishop Auckland, from 10am to 3pm; and the Pioneering Care Centre in Newton Aycliffe will also be taking part, from 10am to 1pm.

In Middlesbrough, there will be events at West Lodge, Albert Park, and Easterside Community Garden, Dawlish Green, both from 10am to 1pm.
