A POPULAR community bike ride returns at the weekend (Sunday, August 31).

Hundreds of cyclists are expected to take to the roads for the eighth annual Durham Big Ride on Sunday, August 31.

As always, routes of three, ten and 25 miles will all start and end at County Hall, Durham.

There is still time to sign up, with the registration deadline being midnight on Wednesday (August 27).

The Beast, the Big Ride’s 52-mile big brother, will take place two weeks later, on Sunday, September 14.

This route takes in some of County Durham’s most challenging terrain and is aimed at experienced cyclists.

Car manufacturer Skoda is getting on board with the ride this year, providing the lead cars for both events.

Race director Colin Wilkes said: “Skoda is a name that has been linked with major cycling for a good number of years across the country and we are delighted that they have come on board this year.

“They will supply us liveried cars that will lead hundreds of riders at the start of both of our rides.”

Chris Slater, a communications manager at Skoda, said: “We wanted to become involved with the Durham community from the start and this is what the Durham Big Ride gives us.”

Riders on both events will have a chance to win a Skoda racing bike worth more than £800.

The Big Ride starts at 9.30am. Entry for the ten- and 25-mile routes costs £20 for over 16s and £7 for under 16s. Family tickets for two adults and two under 16s cost £50 and group discounts are available by calling 03000-267-099.

The Beast starts at Sniperley park-and-ride at 9am. Entrants must be over 18, or over 16 and a member of a recognised cycling group. Entry costs £25.
